Araglin v Kilworth on Saturday

With a crucial showdown against Rathpeacon looming, Willie Kearney and his selectors are continuing to fine tune their junior B hurling team.

The Cavanagh’s of Fermoy division two hurling league has provided us with some excellent games as we prepare for next week’s vital county championship fixture. While we were at the wrong end of last Sunday’s, 2 – 15 to 2 – 12 defeat to Ballyclough, it was still a very competitive fixture with the result in doubt right to the end. Our final game before we meet Rathpeacon is a home tie against fellow parishioners Kilworth in Araglin on Saturday evening next. Kilworth’s second string were also in action last weekend when they fashioned an impressive win over Buttevant. With places on our team still up for grabs, Saturday’s encounter should be keenly contested.

Thursday 19th May, junior B county football league, Araglin v Cill na Martra in Watergrasshill at 7.45pm; Saturday, 21st May, Cavanagh’s of Fermoy division 2 hurling league, Araglin v Kilworth in Araglin at 7pm; Thursday 26th May, junior B hurling championship, Araglin v Rathpeacon in Ballyhooly at 7.30pm (extra time in the event of a draw).

Araglin 2 – 12

Ballyclough 2 – 15

We travelled to Ballyclough last Sunday to take on the home side in a Cavanagh’s of Fermoy division 2 hurling league game. Following on from our win over Castletownroche we were in good form and this was reflected in a very good start. Ballyclough eventually got going and they shot over 9 points before the half time whistle – our response was points from Gus (3), Mark and Brendan Allen.

Similar to the first half, we resumed very positively, with Paul Hickey pointing from long range, Cain also raised a white flag before Mark helped himself to a goal. Ballyclough hit back with a goal of their own and it was nip and tuck from there to the final whistle. Gus second half contribution was a point from play, a pointed free and a free from a 65. Sean O’Grady chipped in with two points. When Brendan Allen finished a scrambled effort to the net, it looked like being our day, however, a late goal six minutes into injury time gave Ballyclough a 3 point win. We played some nice hurling at times with Paul Hickey, Paddy Kenneally and Sean O’Grady all impressing. On the negative side, we gave away some very silly frees and passed up some gilt edged scoring opportunities.

Team, scores and panel: Kevin Fitzgerald, Kieran O’Donovan, Shay Russell, Paddy Kenneally, Paul Hickey (0 -1) Mark Hickey (1 – 01), Laurence Lomasney, Liam Keane, Brendan Allen (1 – 01), Sean O’Grady (0 – 02), Tom Kenneally, Cain O’Mahony (0 – 01) Tom Browne, David Neligan and James Kearney (0 – 06, 3 frees + ‘65’. Well done

Well done to Grainne Kenneally who played an important role in Waterford’s win over Tipperary (1 – 13 to 1 – 12) in the division 3 ladies football final replay played in Semple Stadium recently – a late free from Maria Delahunty decided the issue.
