Cork GAA Clubs’ Draw time

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Cork GAA Clubs’ Draw – formerly known as the Cork County Board Draw. Like most fundraisers, it started in a welter of excitement, however, with the passage of time, interest has waned a bit. While we don’t have a massive uptake for this draw (the subscription is €100 for the year) a core group of supporters have stuck it out and several have been in situ since day one. The club’s draw co-ordinators will be doing their rounds in the coming days so hopefully, we can hold on to these old reliables. In fairness to the draw itself, it has some very attractive prizes – of course the big plus for our club is that we get to keep €45 from every €100 subscription.
On field action comes to an end

The playing season is officially over for our fellas. Our last fixture of the year was a scheduled ‘home’ county hurling league game against Laochara Og (near Macroom). They conceded a walkover. This is our first year entering the county leagues (in football and hurling) – the jury is still out regarding their usefulness and we’ll decide in the coming months whether we will take part next year. At this juncture, it’s appropriate to acknowledge the effort put in

by Araglin players during 2016 – we didn’t get everything right but overall we’re ending the season with a bit of silverware (a division 3 football league) which is always a bonus.

On the lookout for a singer

Araglin Community Hall committee are hosting a singing competition in the weeks ahead with all clubs being requested to forward a representative. We’ve a few individuals short listed and these will be contacted shortly. The competition has a prize fund of €1,000 to the winning club, so it’s worth taking seriously.

Movement on the ladies football front

There are currently moves to re-establish a ladies football team in Araglin. We understand that things are still at an early stage but there does seem to be a lot of interest so we’ll wait and see what happens. Araglin did have a ladies football team in the 1980s which was very successful.

Maurice Foley Memorial Tractor Run

This took place last Sunday and was a great success. The club was well represented on both the tractor and motorcycle fronts. Well done to all concerned – the organisations to benefit from the event were Brú Columbanus and Embrace Farm – a voluntary group who promote farm safety.

All-Ireland football tickets

Demand for the All-Ireland hurling tickets was sluggish, however, it’s a totally difference scenario with the big ball. Requests are coming in from all over Ireland looking (begging) for a ticket. For our part, we’ve been issued with two stand tickets which will be drawn for before the lotto on this Thursday night.

Speaking of the lotto

The lotto is bowling along nicely again. The jackpot is starting to creep up and now stands at a healthy, €2,700. There was no winner last week when the numbers drawn were: 06, 09, 24 & 26.

When there isn’t a winner, €150 is dispensed and last week’s lucky dips went to: €50 – Mick Kay, Ballard (seller, Bill Russell); €50 – Kieran Barry, manager of Fermoy Community Youth Centre (seller Tony Dalton, Kilworth); €25 – Tom Browne, Araglin (seller Jo Browne) and €25 – Leon Jones, c.o. Kepak meat factory (seller Paul Colbert). Lines can be purchased for €2 from club members or from local outlets.

New date for racquetball AGM

The rescheduled date for the Araglin Racquetball AGM is Sunday, 9th October at 6.45pm. Members and potential members are asked to make a special effort to attend – the venue is upstairs in the sports complex.

Bingo reminder

Bingo took place in the hall last Friday night, the crowd was back slightly due to other events going on locally. Nevertheless, there was a good night’s sport with players picking up a few quid a long the way – Kathleen Lyons from Kilworth who is in her 90s had a great run of luck and won 3 or 4 times. Bingo returns to the hall on Friday 7th October at 8.30pm.

Get well soon

At the bingo good wishes were sent to Siobhain Tobin – we would also like to be associated with this. Caitriona Kenneally, the wife of Tom Kenneally Jr., is also wished well.

Down the aisle

Tom Lyons is getting married to Alice Butler this weekend – this is a huge occasion for both families and we wish the happy couple a long and happy life together.

Mass at St. Michael’s Well

The annual St. Michael’s day Mass takes place in Tubbernahulla (between Ballyduff and Araglin) on this evening (Thursday 29th Sept.) at 6.30pm – everyone welcome.

National school clothes collection

Araglin N.S. are holding another clothes collection – you are asked to keep the school in mind if you have an outfit you no longer need.

Hallowe’en camp in Araglin

Claire Leddy is organising a Hallowe’en camp for children at the end of next month – there’s lot of stuff planned and it should be good fun.
